What Is the Dragon Boat Festival?
The Dragon Boat Festival, known as Duanwu Festival (端午节) in Chinese, is one of China’s most important traditional holidays. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar and has a history spanning more than 2,000 years.
In 2009, the Dragon Boat Festival was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its cultural significance and global recognition.
For many Chinese families, the festival is a time to honor history, strengthen family bonds, and preserve cultural traditions.
The Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival
The most widely known origin of the festival is associated with Qu Yuan, a respected poet and statesman of ancient China during the Warring States Period.
Qu Yuan was known for his patriotism and dedication to his country. After witnessing political decline and national challenges, he expressed his concerns through poetry. According to legend, when his homeland fell into crisis, Qu Yuan threw himself into the Miluo River.
Local people rushed out in boats to search for him and threw rice into the river to prevent fish from disturbing his body. These actions gradually evolved into the traditions of dragon boat racing and eating rice dumplings.
Today, Qu Yuan remains a symbol of loyalty, integrity, and commitment to the greater good.
Traditional Customs of the Dragon Boat Festival
Dragon Boat Racing
Dragon boat racing is the most famous festival activity.
Teams paddle long, decorated boats in unison while following the rhythm of drums. The races symbolize teamwork, determination, and collective effort.

Hanging Mugwort and Calamus
Families place mugwort and calamus leaves near doors and windows.
These plants are traditionally believed to help create a healthy living environment and symbolize protection and well-being.
